Troubleshooting Steps for your Default Calendar
Last updated: January 2026
Applies to: WeekCal (iOS), iPadOS
A few WeekCal users have reported missing calendar events, particularly when using the default Apple Calendar (iCloud). This issue appears to stem from Apple’s native calendar syncing, not WeekCal itself. In each case, the events are also missing from the Apple Calendar app, not just WeekCal.
We’re closely monitoring the situation and have confirmed that:
WeekCal mirrors events from your iOS Calendar (it does not store your events directly).
This issue began after iOS 18 updates and may affect multiple calendar apps using Apple’s Calendar API.
What Might Be Causing This
Low device or iCloud storage: If your iPhone or iCloud account is low on available storage, syncing or loading events may fail silently. You can check your device and iCloud storage under Settings > General > iPhone Storage and Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Storage.
Calendar sync settings disabled or misconfigured: If sync settings for a calendar account (e.g. iCloud, Google, Exchange) are off, events may not appear.
Account temporarily signed out or disconnected: Re-adding the account can often re-sync calendar data.
Outdated iOS or calendar app: Updating your iPhone to the latest iOS version can sometimes restore missing data.
Troubleshooting Steps
Restart your device.
A full reboot can reset calendar syncing and background processes.Check device and iCloud storage.
Make sure you have sufficient available space. See Apple’s article: Manage your iCloud storage on your Apple deviceVerify Calendar sync settings.
Go to Settings > Calendar > Accounts, then select each account (iCloud, Google, Exchange) and ensure Calendars is toggled on.Check Default Calendar settings.
Go to Settings > Calendar > Default Calendar and ensure it’s set to a calendar that is actively syncing.Re-add your calendar account.
Remove and re-add the calendar account (especially if using Exchange, Outlook, or Google).Update iOS and apps.
Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest version of iOS. Also update WeekCal via the App Store.Try viewing your events in Apple Calendar.
Open the built-in Calendar app to check if the events are missing there as well. If they are, it confirms this is not an issue isolated to WeekCal.
Try these steps to restore your events:
Check for Hidden Calendars
Go to Apple Calendar and tap Calendars at the bottom. Ensure all relevant calendars are checked and visible.
Verify Calendar Account Settings
Go to:
iPhone Settings > Apps > Calendar > Calendar Accounts
You will see each calendar source:
iCloud: Turn on “Use on this iPhone”. If it’s already on, try toggling it Off and back On. Scroll down and select “Sync > All Events”.
Gmail: Toggle the “Calendars” option off and back on.
Add or Remove Calendar Accounts
Temporarily remove and then re-add the calendar account (iCloud, Gmail, Exchange, etc.) via:
iOS Settings > Calendar > Accounts
This may force a re-sync and allow events to reappear.
Unlink & Relink the Source Calendar in WeekCal
In WeekCal, open:
Settings > Calendars > Manage Calendars
Temporarily toggle the affected calendar off and back on.
Calendar Sync Setting
Try adjusting your device’s sync range:
Open the Settings app > Calendar > Sync > Select “Events 6 Months Back”, then re-select “All Events”
This forces a refresh of older events and may restore missing entries.
Confirm Events Appear in iCloud Calendar
Visit iCloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID.
Check if the missing events appear in your iCloud Calendar to confirm the data is syncing properly.
Check if Your Events Were Saved to an Email-Connected Calendar (e.g. Outlook, Exchange, Gmail)
In some cases, missing events may be due to your device saving events to a calendar tied to an email account (like Outlook or Exchange), rather than iCloud or a local calendar. If that account was removed, signed out, or temporarily disconnected, your events may appear to be gone, but they may still be recoverable.
Step 1: Check Your Default Calendar Setting
Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
Scroll down and tap Calendar.
Tap Default Calendar.
-
Review the selected calendar:
If it shows something like “Outlook,” “Exchange,” or an email address, your events were likely saved to that calendar.
If you recently changed this to “On My iPhone”, events created before the change would still be tied to the original (email) calendar.
Changing the default calendar only affects new events going forward. It does not move or restore any past events.
Take note of the calendar listed—if it says something like “Outlook,” “Exchange,” or your email address, your events were likely saved to that calendar.
If you recently signed out of or removed that account, your events will not appear in WeekCal or the Apple Calendar app until the account is reconnected.
Step 2: Reconnect Your Email Account
Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
Tap Add Account and re-add the email account (e.g. Outlook or Exchange).
When prompted, make sure Calendars is enabled.
Once added, open the Apple Calendar app and check if your events reappear.
WeekCal will also display your events once they are available again through the Apple Calendar system.
Check Your Events Online
If you’re unsure whether events are still available, log in to your email provider’s calendar on the web (for example, https://outlook.live.com/calendar) to see if your events are there.
Suppose your default calendar was previously set to an email account, and that account is no longer active on your device. In that case, the calendar data may be temporarily hidden rather than lost. Reconnecting the account is the best first step to recover your events.
Check Where WeekCal Is Saving New Events
If your events are missing in WeekCal, it’s essential to check which calendar account WeekCal is using to save new events.
WeekCal Calendar Preferences
To check this in WeekCal:
Open WeekCal
Tap the gear icon to open Settings
Tap Calendar Preferences
Under New Event Defaults, check your Default Calendar
This setting determines which calendar account your events are saved to by default—such as iCloud, “On My iPhone,” Outlook, Gmail, or another connected calendar account.
⚠️ What Happens If the Calendar Account Is Removed
Suppose the calendar account selected under Default Calendar was later removed from your device, for example, by logging out of your email or calendar account. In that case, those events will no longer appear in WeekCal or the Apple Calendar app.
Since WeekCal syncs with the calendar accounts currently connected to your device, removing or signing out of one of these accounts may result in the disappearance of calendars and events from the app. The events themselves may still exist, but they will not be visible unless the account is reconnected.
Add a Test Calendar
Add a new calendar from another provider (e.g., Google) to test if the issue is isolated to iCloud calendars.
What’s Next
This appears to be a known issue with Apple Calendar on iOS 18+.
A future iOS update may address the problem.
If you've already tried the steps above and the issue continues, please contact Apple Support directly to investigate your iCloud Calendar data.
